Shiffrin youngest ever Slalom Champion

February 21, 2014

18 year old Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA became the youngest Olympic slalom champion with victory in the women’s event.

The world champion made an early mistake during her second run, but recovered well to post a combined time of one minute 44.54 seconds.

Marlies Schild took silver, to add to the one she won in 2010, while fellow Austrian Kathrin Zettel claimed bronze.

Shiffrin broke the record held by Italy’s Paoletta Magoni-Sforza, who was was 19 when she won in Sarajevo 1984.

After a promising first run Ireland’s 17 year old Florence Bell failed early and was disappointed not to gain a finishing position in either GS or Slalom.
