A History of Team Ireland at the Winter Olympic Games

Team Ireland made its Winter Olympic debut at the Albertville Games in 1992, entering two bobsleigh teams and marking the country’s first step onto the Winter Olympic stage. Summer Olympians Terry McHugh and Pat McDonagh finished 32nd in the two-man event, while Gerry Macken and Malachy Sheridan placed 38th in the same discipline.

McHugh remains one of Ireland’s most notable Olympians, having competed in six Olympic Games in total, four Summer Games in the javelin and two Winter Games in bobsleigh, making him Ireland’s most frequent Olympic competitor to date.

Ireland’s Winter Olympic story continued to grow in the years that followed. Tamsen McGarry became the first Irish woman to compete at the Winter Olympics in Alpine Skiing at Salt Lake City 2002. Those Games also delivered Ireland’s best Winter Olympic result, when Clifton Wrottesley finished a remarkable fourth place in the skeleton, just outside the medals.

More recently, Irish athletes continued to compete on the world’s biggest winter stage at Beijing 2022, reflecting the steady expansion of Ireland’s presence across winter sports.
