About Squash
Squash is a fast-paced racquet sport played between two athletes in a four-walled court. Players take turns striking a small rubber ball against the front wall, combining speed, endurance, skill and tactical thinking in rallies that can change direction and intensity in an instant. Matches are typically played over the best of five games, with players scoring points on every rally.
Widely regarded as one of the most physically demanding sports in the world, squash requires exceptional fitness, agility and decision-making. Since its origins in the nineteenth century, the sport has grown into a global game played in more than 180 countries, with athletes competing at the highest level on the PSA Squash Tour and at major international championships.
A landmark moment in the sport's history will come at LA28, where squash will make its long-awaited Olympic debut after decades of campaigning for inclusion. Its addition reflects the sport's growing global reach and popularity, giving athletes the opportunity to compete for Olympic medals for the first time.
In Ireland, squash is administered by Squash Ireland, which supports participation and performance pathways from grassroots clubs to international competition. The sport has a proud tradition across the country, with Irish players representing their clubs, provinces and nation on the international stage, and now able to aspire to Olympic competition as part of the road to LA28.
