The first Games held in Latin America and at high altitude, Mexico City 1968 produced extraordinary athletic performances in the sprints and jumps, and was marked by the black power salute of American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the medal podium - one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
The Games were held against a backdrop of political unrest; a student massacre had taken place in the city just ten days before the opening ceremony. Jim McCourt, Ireland's bronze medallist from Tokyo 1964, carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony. Mick Dowling won two bouts at bantamweight before being eliminated, the standout Irish boxing performance.
Noel Carroll reached the 800m semi-final. Juliet Jobling-Purser finished seventh in the equestrian three-day event. Donnacha O'Dea competed in swimming.
