Los Angeles 1984 was boycotted by the Soviet Union and most Eastern Bloc nations in retaliation for the US-led boycott of Moscow 1980, and the city hosted the Games for the second time, having first done so in 1932.
It was nonetheless a remarkable Games for Irish athletics. John Treacy won silver in the marathon in one of the great performances in Irish athletic history, overhauling the field in the closing miles despite never having previously finished a major marathon.
Eamonn Coghlan, the world indoor mile record holder, reached the 5000 metres final and finished eleventh. Jerry Kiernan finished ninth in the marathon behind Treacy. Gerry Mullins carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
