Allen wins 5 star event

Irish showjumping wonderboy Bertram Allen left Olympic medallists in his wake when galloping to victory and collecting the €50,000 winner’s purse in the 5-Star Longines Grand Prix at Lummen in Belgium.

Riding the brilliant grey mare, Molly Malone, the German-based 18-year-old was one of five to qualify for the third-round jump-off from a field of 48 starters.

Allen showed huge potential during his pony and junior jumping career when winning numerous medals, including individual European gold, and at senior level he continues to astound.

Last Friday Allen was on the Irish team to finish third at Lummen in the opening leg of the premier FEI Nations Cup series.

On Saturday, Billy Twomey won the Grand Prix Qualifier with Tinka’s Serenade.

Irish team manager Robert Splaine said: “To win a 5-Star Grand Prix at 18 is a tremendous achievement for Bertram, and the future is bright. He has polished off a fantastic week for Irish showjumping here.”
