BIOGRAPHY
Sean Greenwood represented Ireland in the men’s skeleton at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, finishing 27th overall.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, he qualifies for Ireland through his mother Sibéal Foyle, who emigrated to Canada from Galway in the early 1980s, and grew up partly on the west coast of Ireland as well as in western Canada.
He studied economics at the University of Calgary and was a competitive rugby player until two separate shoulder injuries prompted him to seek a new challenge. He took up skeleton in 2008 after watching it on television, signing up for a driving school at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary – just 10 minutes from his home. He originally trialled for the Canadian skeleton team but chose to represent Ireland as it offered greater opportunities to race at international level. He won gold, silver and bronze medals in North America Cup events in Whistler and Lake Placid.
He was coached at Sochi by Jeff Pain, a Canadian Olympic silver medallist at Turin 2006. A commercial helicopter pilot, he was based in Whistler, BC.
