William ‘Bill’ Campbell
Shooting
BIOGRAPHY
Bill Campbell competed in the shooting at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games alongside three more experienced teammates – Dermot Kelly, Arthur MacMahon and Gerry Brady – who were veterans of the 1968 Games.
All four held the title of Master Shooter of Europe, a distinction reflecting genuine excellence in their discipline.
The Irish shooters were described as ‘the purest of amateurs competing in an environment in which sponsorship and commercial support for leading shooters had become the norm’ – a context that made their Olympic participation all the more commendable. Team captain Arthur MacMahon reported that the Irish team showed considerable improvement on their Mexico performances.
