Andy Lee was Ireland's only boxer at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, competing in the middleweight division at the age of 20. He won his opening bout on 14 August, taking a decision over Alfredo Angulo of Mexico, then met Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam of Cameroon in the second round and lost on a decision, placing equal ninth. Both men went on to fight for world titles as professionals, and N'Dam advanced to the quarter-final in Athens, where the eventual gold medallist stopped his run.
Lee boxed out of St Francis Boxing Club in Limerick. He turned professional in 2006 under Emanuel Steward at the Kronk Gym in Detroit, and in December 2014 in Las Vegas he stopped Matt Korobov in the sixth round to win the vacant WBO middleweight title. He was the first boxer from the Irish Traveller community to win a major professional world championship, and held the belt into 2015.
He retired from the ring in 2017 with 35 wins from 39 professional contests, and has since worked as a trainer and broadcaster.
