Gerry O'Reilly was a two-time NCAA 3,000 metres runner-up and six-time Big East champion at Villanova University, where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, and competed in the men's 1,500 metres at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, recording 3:43.23 in his heat.
From Dunboyne, Co. Meath, O'Reilly played soccer and Gaelic football before concentrating on athletics at the age of sixteen, winning the Irish junior 1,500m title.
He moved to the United States in 1983 on a track scholarship to Villanova, where he studied economics and ran seven sub-four-minute miles, including a personal best mile of 3:54.6 during his junior year.
After graduating in 1987, he went on to a career in finance, joining The Vanguard Group in 1992, where he became a principal portfolio manager overseeing one of the world's largest mutual funds.
He passed away at the age of just 61 in June 2026.
