Paddy Kavanagh was a central figure in the Irish defence at the 1948 London Olympic Games, singled out by the Official Report for holding 'the middle of the defence in fine style' and having 'a tremendous job to do' which he 'did well', in Ireland's 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands at Fratton Park, Portsmouth on 26 July. Following the football tournament, Kavanagh and Liam Jones made the daily journey to the Empire Pool to observe the training methods of the world's leading swimmers - an experience that transformed their approach to the sport. Jones and Kavanagh went on to dominate Irish freestyle swimming in the years after the GamesDublin-native Paddy Kavanagh played minor football with the Glen Rovers in 1939 before heading south where he played for Evergreen FC while serving in the military in the early 1940s. He then signed with the Shamrock Rovers before joining Bohemians FC of the League of Ireland in 1947-48, making 30 appearances that season without scoring a goal. In that same season, he was selected for the Irish football team that competed in the men's tournament at the 1948 Olympics in Ireland, which lost 3-1 in its only match to the Netherlands.
He later returned to the Shamrock Rovers in 1948-49 and played for St. Patrick's Athletic in 1950. Standing at over 6 feet tall, he was noted as a versatile utility player who was capable of playing many different positions. Kavanagh later emigrated to the United States in 1954 and settled in Massachusetts with his wife and six children, and died there in 1993.
