Karl Griffen qualified for the boys 800m in a time of 1:51.89 in the first of three heats. Griffen slowed to save energy towards the final 30 metres and allowed Martinez of Spain 1:51.75, and Cozacioc of Macedonia to qualify in 1:51.62. As it turned out they were the fastest three qualifiers of the three heats.
Amy O’Donoghue finished 7th in her girls 800m heat in 2:21.43 well short of her Personal best of 2:09.67 and failed to make the final.
Sean Toibin was always in contention in the 3000m final until the final 300 metres, eventually finishing a very credible 4th in a personal best of 8:29.91.
