Banks pleased with European results

Ireland’s swimmers have set a total of 21 National Records at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Chartres, France.

 “It has been a hugely successful championship for the Irish team” commented Swim Ireland’s High Performance Director Peter Banks.

We are delighted with the way the whole team performed, Sycerika and Barry led the way as Seniors with fantastic performances, whilst the Junior swimmers stepped up to the mark at their first Senior International Competition swimming personal bests and setting records” 

Sycerika McMahon finished 4th in the 100m Breaststroke Final on the last day of competition.  McMahon set a new Irish Senior Record of 1:06.18 in the final which was won by Denmark’s Rikke Moeller Pedersen in a new European Record of 1:04.12.  17 year old McMahon won Bronze on Thursday in the 50m Breaststroke Final adding to the European Silver she won in May.

Barry Murphy was in record breaking form again today as he set two new Irish records in the 50m Butterfly.  Murphy finished 14th in the heats in a time of 23.62 before going into the semi-final and lowering that time to 23.57 where he was ranked 15th overall.

It has been a hugely successful championship for the Dubliner who had his best ever international ranking yesterday when he was 6th in the 50m Breaststroke final.  Murphy will be back in action at Ireland’s SC Championships next weekend before he departs for the World SC Championships in Istanbul from the 12th – 16th December.

Brendan Hyland (25.05) set another Irish Junior Record in the 50m Butterfly heats today, he then joined the Irish trio of Brendan Gibbons, David O’Sullivan and Cian Duffy to set their second Irish Junior Relay Record of the Championship in the 4x50m Medley Team Relay clocking 1:35.53.

The team will be back in action on Friday (30th Nov) at Ireland’s Short Course National Championships in Lisburn.
