Scott Evans was first on-court against Flemming Quach of Denmark. The 21 year old Dane who is now ranked 80 in the World took the opening set 21-17. In the second set it was again a close encounter but Quach once again took the important points to win the second set 21-17 to proceed to the last 16 round where he will face fellow Dane Kim Bruun.
Chloe Magee was next on-court for the Irish facing another Danish player Lene Clausen. The Irish number one was seeded seven for the event and made a good start taking the opening set 21-15. In the second set Clausen had a good start and Magee trailed throughout the set and despite a late comeback it was the Dane who took the game 21-19. In the deciding game Clausen again started strong and went on to close out the match 21-14 to progress to the last 16 round where she will face Dinar Dyah Ayustine of Indonesia.
The last of the Irish on-court on Day one of the 2013 Belgium Open was Irish number one mixed pairing of Sam and Chloe Magee against world number 79 pairing Jakub Bitman and Alzbeta Basova of Czech Republic. The Czech pair had beaten Julien Maio and Teshana Vignes Waran of France 18-21 21-11 22-20 in 3 sets to set up the last round of 16 with the Irish Duo. The opening set was a nip and tuck affair up until 13-12 in the first where the Irish pair raced ahead to 15-13 and once the Irish pairing took the lead they controlled the set winning the game 21-15. In the second set again the match was evenly balanced up until 7-7 with the Irish once more getting the crucial break of points to earn an 11-7 lead in the mid game interval. After the break the Irish pairing resumed where they left off and eased through the second set 21-16. This will set up a Quarter Final where they will potentially meet World number 23 pairing Chris Langridge and Heather Olver of England who are the number one seeded pair at this event.
