Bryan continues to improve

Ireland’s Chris Bryan has finished 16th at the FINA Open Water  10K World Championships in Barcelona. Bryan made a good start quickly settling into the leading pack of 25 of the  65 swimmers, finishing the first lap of the 2.5 Kilometre course in 15th place just 8 seconds behind the leader.

The Clare man moved up the rankings to 12th at the halfway mark after 55 minutes of swimming just 5 seconds behind the leader Rhys Maidstone-Hodson of New Zealand. With just 2.5 Kilometres to go, Bryan had moved back to 26th place, still with the leading pack and just 14 seconds behind the then leading Canadian Richard Weinberger.

The 23 year old pushed on for the last 2.5 Kilometeres moving back up the rankings to finish 16th overall in 1 hour, 49 minutes and 33 seconds, up 17 places from the 2011 Championships where he was 33rd overall.

“It was a very tough race as expected, but I stayed composed” commented Bryan “A bit of bad luck at the finish but it happens. I’m happy with the result, that’s 16th in the World and as hard as it gets. But I’m not satisfied, after a non ideal post-Olympic year we can more than work with this result to get after the positions I really want!”

2011 World Champion Spyridon Gianniotis retained the World Championship title finishing first in 1:49:11.8, having been placed 23rd at the 5 kilometre mark, he moved into 5th at 7.5 Kilometres before making his move to the front where he lead for the final 2 kilometres. Olympic 10K Champion and 5K World Champion Oussama Mellouli was third in 1:49:19.2.
