Cian O’Connor Interview

Cian O’Connor talks about life as one of Ireland’s world class top show jumping riders. Based at Karlswood Stables in County Meath,  he achieved the pinnacle of his sporting career to date when claiming individual bronze at the London Olympic Games. Cian competes successfully all over Europe, America, the Middle East and China. He is also a coach and horse producer.

Cian has been a member of 98 senior Irish Nation’s Cup teams, has won numerous Grand Prix and competed in two World Championships, three European Championships and two Olympic Games.

Cian was born in Dublin and raised in County Kildare and has good sporting blood, his late Grandfather, Karl Mullen, was one of the all time great Irish International rugby legends. Married to Ruth and now living in County Meath, the couple welcomed a new addition to the family in 2013 with the arrival of Ben. Cian has a world-class facility, Karlswood Stables from where he trains his horses, coaches up and coming young riders and also trades in quality showjumpers.

Cian divides his time between competing nationally and internationally, buying and selling top quality horses, coaching and taking care of all the general logistics that go with running a business – or as he says himself “a travelling circus!”

Cian is greatly appreciative of the excellent team around him and believes they play a big part in his success, notably his wife, Ruth, mentor and coach, Gerry Mullins and his invaluable Karlswood staff.

Cian’s trademark organisational skills play a major role in his success story. A strong work ethic, discipline and attention to detail are combined with a passion for producing winning performances and a great pride in flying the Irish flag. Cian has a sharp eye for a good horse, is hugely ambitious and enthusiastic and has already his focus on the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
