David O’Loughlin Gains Cycling Spot For Beijing

The OCI President Pat Hickey received confirmation today (June 17th) from Gilles Peruzzi of the UCI that Ireland had qualified for one position in the Men’s Individual Pursuit competition which will take place in the stunning new cycling velodrome in Laoshan, Beijing.

Mr. Hickey commented: “We have been putting the pressure on at international levels to get this spot, one that is ready made for David O’Loughlin and we expect that Cycling Ireland will formally nominate David to us for selection onto the Irish Olympic squad in the coming days”

Frank Campbell, Ireland’s Olympic Team manager welcomed the successful outcome of the lobbying campaign. “David finished 6th in the World Championships in March and, with the full support of his Galway-based Pezula Racing team, has been continuing his intensive training regime in the hope that the lobbying campaign would bear fruit.”

Mr. Campbell congratulated the Olympic Council and Cycling Ireland on their intensive work on gaining the vital spot and also thanked the Irish Sports Council for its full support.
