Day 12 Irish in Action

Athletics: South African-born Alistair Cragg is the Irish national record holder over the 3,000m and 5,000m distances and will be competing in his third Olympics when he makes his debut at London 2012 this morning.

The 31-year-old finished 12th in the 5,000m in Athens in 2008 and made the final over the same distance in Beijing four years later. His personal best in the 5,000m is 13:03.53.

The 5,000m heats begin at 1045 – Cragg goes in the second heat.

Boxing: A dominant 26-15 win against Natasha Jonas on Monday guaranteed Katie Taylor at least a bronze medal at the London Olympics. However the 26-year-old Bray fighter will be hoping to improve on that when she faces Mayzuna Chorieva of Tajikistan in the Flyweight semi-final this afternoon.

Chorieva defeated China’s Cheng Dong in the last round on a score of 13-8, but will go into this fight as the underdog against Ireland’s four-time World Champion.

Taylor goes into the ring at 1400.

Boxing: Paddy Barnes will hoping to become the first Irish boxer – and only the second Irish sportsperson – to win medals at separate Olympics when he faces Devendro Singh Laishram tonight.

A win against the Indian fighter will guarantee the Belfast Flyweight at least a Bronze medal at this year’s Olympics. Barnes was a comfortable 15-10 victory over Cameroon’s Thomas Essomba on Sunday. Laishram had to overcome Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorj to reach this stage.
