Derek Burnett finishes in the top 10 at ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Nicosia, Cyprus

4 time Olympian Derek Burnett from County Longford finished tied 10th in the Men’s Trap event at the ISSF World Cup, Nicosia, Cyprus, with a score of 119 out of 125 targets.

This round of the ISSF World Cup was held on the 10/11th June at the Nicosia Olympic Shooting range.

With a very strong field of competitors; including Gold medallists from the last 5 Olympic Games; the Nicosia range is a notoriously windy venue. Wind and exceptionally high temperatures made scoring conditions difficult. Engaging recent technical changes and drawing on his vast experience, Derek performed consistently well over the 2 days, finishing just 1 target short of a shoot-off with London 2012 Olympic Champion for the 6 man semi-final and with it, an opportunity to shoot for the medals.

The sport of shotgun shooting has very fine margins on the world stage and on this occasion Derek finished 10th. Continuing to work on technical changes made post London, this was an improvement on the previous World Cup in Al Ain, UAE, where Derek finished just outside the top 20. The World Cup in Cyprus was won by Erik Varga of Slovakia. Silver Josip Glasnovic of Croatia and Bronze by 2004 Olympic Champion Alexi Alipov of Russia. Double Olympic Champion Michael Diamond of Australia finished in 5th place.
