Euro Diving & Swimming Teams Announced

Swim Ireland has today announced the teams that will represent Ireland in Diving and Swimming at the LEN European Championships from May 9th to 22nd at the London Aquatics Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

2016 marks the first time in almost 20 years that Ireland will be represented at a senior European Diving Championships. Olympic qualifier Oliver Dingley will lead the team with 2015 European Games finalist Natasha MacManus and Jack Ffrench also competing from Monday May 9th. Dingley and Ffrench will be first to take to the boards for the 1m Springboard Preliminaries on Tuesday.

Speaking about the announcement Diving Head Coach Damian Ball commented

Our whole team has been lifted after Ireland gained their first Olympic qualifier in 68 years and we go into these European Championships excited and full of optimism.

The back room staff have worked hard getting our divers into good physical shape, and I’m extremely grateful for the support given to diving to get our team this far.

The Euro’s will be a tough challenge for Ireland’s divers, there’s no getting away from that, but we will enjoy the ride together and see where it takes us.”

A team of 12 will represent Ireland at the pool swimming event. Olympic Games qualifiers Fiona Doyle, Nicholas Quinn and Shane Ryan will compete, although Ryan’s participation will be dependent on his nationality transfer coming through from the International governing body FINA, due on May 13th.

The three will be joined by Sycerika McMahon, Dan Sweeney, Alex Murphy, Jordan Sloan, Brendan Hyland and Curtis Coulter, who has been drafted in for the men’s medley relay based on his performance in the 100m Freestyle at the Irish Open Championships last weekend. Juniors Danielle Hill, Mona McSharry and Conor Ferguson will also compete.

Ferguson was just five hundredths of a second off the Olympic qualification time in the 100m Backstroke at the Irish Open. Competition in the pool begins on May 16th with the meet acting as a last chance for Irish swimmers to qualify for the Olympic Games.
