European Bronze for shooting

Competing under oppressive weather conditions Burnett took the two day competition in his stride and finished his first days competition in joint 4th position overall. Holding that position overnight he kept his form dropping only two targets during the following day to leave him in joint 3rd position going into the final on a score of 121 out of 125.

The final comprised an impressive line up of international talent with Beijing Olympic silver medalist Pellelio of Italy, Fernandez of Spain, Clamens of France and two shooters from the Czech Republic Liptak and Gach.

Burnett had the second best score of the final scoring 23 out of 25 leaving him one clear of Clamens and taking the bronze behind Pellelio in silver and Fernandez with the gold.

Other Irish performances were Thomas O’Grady on 109, former world silver medalist Philip Murphy with 108, Wayne Byrne on 107 and Martin O’Corragain on 106.

This is an auspicious performance for the Irish Olympic shooting team as they finish their preparations ahead of World Championships in Munich at the end of July where the first quota places in shooting for the Olympic Games of London become available.
