Evans looking forward to Baku 2015

Ireland’s Scott Evans is in confident mood ahead of the Baku 2015 European Games and will be pushing for a place on the podium.

Evans has competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, losing to eventual winner Lin Dan of China in the first round in London.

He is currently 27th in the world, and playing the best badminton of his career and reached his best-ever 24th ranking on March 12 – the first Irish player to crack the top 25 of the world rankings.

Evans will likely be a top-six seed at Baku 2015 as only five Europeans are ranked ahead of him – the Danish trio of Jan Jan Ø. Jørgensen, Viktor Axelsen and Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, Marc Zwiebler of Germany and England’s Rajiv Ouseph.

“I’m still waiting to see the opposition. But no matter what, it’s going to be strong opposition,”

After appearing at two Olympics, Evans is excited about experiencing the first European Games.

In an interview with the Irish Times he said “I know the Asian Games are huge. I can’t see why the European Games can’t get as big. I see a huge future in it, especially for the smaller sports. You have the best athletes going to it,” Evans said. “It’s also good to have something like the Olympic Games that is not the Olympic Games. Then when the athletes go to the Olympic Games everything isn’t new to them.”

And the Badminton ace said Baku 2015 will be important to him. “It’s the first time they have been staged and going away with a big Irish Team is a great thing to experience,” he added.
