Team Ireland competed at the 2001 European Youth Olympic Festival in Murcia, Spain, where the highlight of the Games was a historic gold medal performance by the Irish men's football team. Ireland's men's football team delivered an outstanding tournament, capturing gold medal honours and securing Ireland's first team gold medal in EYOF history. The success remains one of the landmark achievements in Irish EYOF participation. While no other Irish medal-winning performances are recorded in available EYOF medal histories, participation across a range of sports provided valuable international experience for Irish athletes and contributed to their long-term sporting development. Murcia 2001 remains a significant chapter in Team Ireland's EYOF history due to the football team's gold-medal success and the continued growth of Ireland's presence at major European youth multi-sport events. Unfortunately, Irish track & field athletes and cyclists didn't get a chance to shine in Murcia as the organisers didn't include these core sports in the programme.
