Australia and Northern Ireland tied on 1174 points with the tie being broken by the number of centre tens scored by each team. Potent and Clifton having scored 64 centre tens, took the bronze medal over Duff and Hall’s total of 61 centre tens. To score a centre ten or ‘X’, the 5.6mm (.22in) bullet must break the line of a circle; 5mm in diameter.
Gary admitted that he was ‘gutted’ by the result, but proud of the fact that this was the highest placed finish for Northern Ireland in the event, beating the previous best of 6th. Their score of 1174 also equals the highest score by Northern Ireland in this event. Scotland took the gold medal with a score of 1181 followed by England with a score of 1178. India took fifth place with a score of 1173.
Gary who is currently ranked 78th in the World, also competed again on Wednesday 13th October in the Mens 50m Prone Rifle Singles competition, qualifying for the final in sixth place with a score of 592 alongside his compatriot Matthew Hall, who went into the final with a score of 593. Both men held their positions through the final with Hall taking Northern Ireland’s first ever bronze medal in the event.
