Hockey Hall of Fame

Irish Hockey held their 6th Annual Awards evening at the Burlington Hotel at the weekend. ; Gwen Doherty, Violet McBride, Mark Burns, and the OCI’s Chief Executive Stephen Martin were inducted into Hockey’s Hall of Fame.

STEPHEN MARTIN

 

INTERNATIONAL CAREER:   1980 – 1992

 

INTERNATIONAL CAPS:   135 Ireland and 94 GB

 

POSITION:    Defender

 

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION:   2011

 

A defender of  the highest calibre Stephen Martin won a Silver Medal at the 1978 European U21 Championships in Dublin and finished 8th at the first U21 Junior World Cup in Versailles in 1979. 

 He made his senior debut in 1980 and played in the 1983, 1987 and 1991 European Championships as well as the 1990 World Cup in Lahore.  

 

 He went on to win 135 Ireland Caps in a distinguished hockey career, and 94 Caps for Great Britain, a Bronze Medal in the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and Gold in Seoul in 1988. 

 

 He captained Great Britain to sixth place in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and played in 12 Champions Trophy Tournaments winning bronze and silver medals.

The Awards evening was attended by many who support Irish Hockey including Liam Molloy, General Manager of ESB Electric Ireland, Darragh Maloney (MC), guest speakers Brian Kerr and Tommy Bowe, and representatives from a number of sporting bodies including the Irish Sports Council, Sports Council of Northern Ireland and the Olympic Council of Ireland.

 

Many clubs and hockey supporters joined to celebrate outstanding talent which was displayed throughout the season.

Senior Men’s Club Player of the Year

Ireland Senior Women’s Club Player of the Year

Shortlists included: Elaine Bromell (Catholic Institute HC), Aisling Campion (Loreto HC), Kate Dillon (Railway Union HC), Emma Stewart (Armagh LHC).

Volunteer of the Year

Shortlists included: Alice Garrad (Ulster Elks), Helen Johnston (Railway Union LHC), Cliona Kennedy (Greenfields HC), Geraldine O’Carroll (Catholic Institute HC)

Umpire of the Year

Shortlists included: Malcolm Coombes, Fiona Davitt, Davy Foster, Carol Metchette.

Winner: Davy Foster

 

U18 Male Player of the Year

Shortlists included: Mathew Allister (Annadale HC and Sullivan), David Cole (Monkstown HC and St. Andrews), Shane O’Donoghue (Glenanne HC and The High School), Ian Sloan (Cookstown HC and Cookstown High).

Ireland U18 Female Player of the Year
