Three former Team Ireland European Youth Olympic Festival athletes spearheaded a week of outstanding performances for Irish sport, with Emer Heverin and Seth Dunwoody crowned European champions while Rían McCrystal claimed victory at the Quanta Capital Junior Tour of Ireland.
There was also international success for Shane Sweetnam in Sweden, where he secured a prestigious five-star Rolex Grand Prix victory, while sailor Eve McMahon continued her impressive season with gold at the ILCA North American Championships in Los Angeles.
Cycling
Dunwoody Crowned U23 European Champion
Another former Team Ireland European Youth Olympic Festival representative, Seth Dunwoody, produced a stunning return to track racing by winning the U23 Points Race European title.
The 20-year-old had already shown strong form with fifth place in the U23 Individual Pursuit earlier in the week before delivering a championship-winning performance in the Points Race.
The contest developed into a head-to-head battle with Germany’s Tobias Muller, with the pair trading points throughout the race. Dunwoody’s road racing experience proved decisive as the event progressed, with the Bahrain Victorious rider growing stronger through the middle and latter stages of the race to secure the European crown.
The result adds to an exceptional season for Dunwoody, who recently became Elite Men’s Road Race National Champion at just 20 years of age.
Heverin Claims European Gold and Silver
Former Team Ireland European Youth Olympic Festival athlete Emer Heverin enjoyed a breakthrough championships at the Junior/U23 European Track Championships in Cottbus, Germany, returning home with both gold and silver medals.
Heverin first secured silver in the Junior Omnium after a consistent performance across the four-race competition. The Belfast rider opened with fourth place in the Scratch Race before winning two sprints in the Tempo Race to finish second overall in that event. A fifth-place finish in the Elimination Race kept her firmly in medal contention before a composed ride in the final Points Race secured the silver medal.
Just 24 hours later, the first-year junior went one better, claiming her first European Championship title. Heverin produced a calm and controlled display throughout the race and saved her biggest effort for the final sprint, taking maximum points on the last lap to seal gold.
Competing at her first-ever European Championships, Heverin leaves Cottbus with an impressive haul of one gold and one silver medal. The achievement continues a remarkable season for the Cycling Ireland High Performance Pathway rider, who recently captured both the Junior Road Race and Time Trial national titles in Mayo. Earlier in the season, she announced herself on the senior stage by outsprinting Olympians and world champions to win the Senior Women’s Criterium National Championship in Dublin.
McCrystal Triumphs at Junior Tour of Ireland
There was further success for a former Team Ireland European Youth Olympic Festival athlete as Rían McCrystal claimed overall victory at the Quanta Capital Junior Tour of Ireland while racing for the Irish national team.
McCrystal’s success in one of the most prestigious junior stage races on the international calendar further highlights the strength of Ireland’s emerging cycling talent and caps an excellent period for Irish riders both at home and abroad.
Equestrian
Sweetnam Delivers Grand Prix Glory in Sweden
Shane Sweetnam produced one of the finest victories of his career by winning the €500,000 Rolex Grand Prix of Falsterbo in Sweden aboard the Irish-bred gelding CSF James Kann Cruz (ISH).
Facing many of the world’s leading show jumping combinations, Sweetnam entered the arena last in a 14-horse jump-off with Germany’s World No. 2 Richard Vogel setting the target after a clear round in 38.63 seconds. The Irish rider responded with a flawless display, guiding James Kann Cruz around the course clear in 37.68 seconds to secure victory.
The triumph marked the pair’s first-ever five-star Grand Prix win together and ended a long wait for one of the sport’s most consistent partnerships. Sweetnam and the Galway-bred 13-year-old gelding have been among the world’s leading combinations for several years, and their breakthrough victory came against a world-class field.
Sailing
North American Championship Success for McMahon
Eve McMahon continued her excellent season by topping the podium at the ILCA North American Championships in San Pedro, Los Angeles.
The Irish sailor secured a comfortable overall victory to finish ahead of Switzerland’s Anja Von Allmen in second place and Poland’s Agata Barwińska in third.
There were also encouraging performances from the wider Irish team, with Finn Lynch finishing ninth in the ILCA 7 fleet and Ewan McMahon placing 16th.
