Inaugural European Games – Baku 2015 Selections

At the Olympic Council of Ireland Executive Committee Meeting on Monday 20th October 2014 the first ever selections were made for the Inaugural European Games in Baku 2015.

The honour of being the first five athletes selected goes to the sports of Boxing and Wrestling.

 

 

The five athletes selected are:

Women’s Boxing

Katie Taylor               60Kg

Michaela Walsh        54Kg

Ciara Smith                51Kg

 

Wrestling – Men’s Freestyle

Alex Dolly                    84Kg

Soslan Tuaev              74Kg

The President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey said “He was delighted to see our selections get underway, we have looked forward to this day for some time. It is great to see that first on the list is our current Olympic Champion, World Champion and European Champion Katie Taylor. Congratulations to the first five athletes selected and to the sports of Boxing and Wrestling. I look forward to many more selections in the coming months”.

Chef de Mission for the Baku 2015 European Games, Dermot Henihan said “I very much welcome the first selections and we hope that they are the first of many. To date we have 43 quota places achieved in 7 sports and we predict that we will have in the region of 65 athletes from 12 to 13 sports in our final team. Congratulations to Katie, Michaela, Ciara, Alex and Soslan, you are now a part of the history of Team Irelands participation in the European Games by being the first ever athletes selected.”
