IOC appoint Kasper to oversee 2012 World Youth Olympics

Kasper was appointed as chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) co-ordination commission for the Innsbruck Games.

The Swiss official served on co-ordination commissions for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and Turin in 2006 and is a member of the IOC panel for the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Kasper is currently accompanying IOC president Jacques Rogge on a visit to Innsbruck.

Innsbruck, which staged the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, was awarded the youth event last month after defeating Kuopio, Finland, in an IOC vote.

The Youth Games, a 10-day event, will feature about 1,000 athletes aged 14-18 competing in seven sports – skiing, ice hockey, biathlon, bobsled, curling, luge and figure skating. The Olympic Council of Ireland will review entry requirements and discuss the inclusion and preparation of an Irish Team with National Federations.
