Ireland’s men continued their goal scoring ways when they took on France tonight in their second match of the UCD 4 Nations Cup rolling 6 past Les Bleus.
Ireland opened early when Jermyn threw an aerial from left to right picking up Gormley approaching the circle who fired it through enabling Darling to pick up and scramble it into the goal to take the lead. Ireland continued to enjoy the lion’s share of attacking play but they were finding it difficult to get clear shots away until Cargo had his stick hooked as he tried to fire home within the circle resulting in a stroke, which Jermyn slotted away with ease.
Just two minutes on and Ireland made it three when Jermyn dragged home his trademark penalty corner strike before half time.
France came out in the second half looking like they had more intent than they previously had but Harte in goals dealt comfortably with all of the early chances. Ireland then added a fourth to their tally when Cockram slotted home at close range. It was Cockram who set up the 5th when he stole the ball to set Darling up for a reverse stick shot to put the game beyond reach, but just to be sure Ireland put in a sixth courtsey of Watt.
France could console themselves with a lone goal five from the end when they skirted along the back line to pass the ball back to Pauchet on the penalty spot to volley in at waist height.
Commenting after the match Coach Revington was happier with his sides performance compared to Monday’s game saying “Offensivley between the 23’s there was a marked improvement from Monday’s match and that gave us more control over the game for longer periods.”
