Ireland's Murphy wins World Championship Silver

Irelands Philip Murphy has claimed the individual Silver medal at the ISSF World Championships Olympic Trap competition in Cyprus having finished second out of a field of 146 competitors.

Having entered the final in joint second place tied with five other competitors on a score of 123/125, Philip used his vast wealth of experience and kept his head under the scorching Mediterranean sun while those around him lost theirs and with half a dozen targets to go was almost assured of a medal.

However, with the end in sight the pressure began to show and targets began to slip away on Philip in a wind swept Nicosia and with them the chance of Gold.

Heartbreakingly Philip missed out on what would have been Irelands second Beijing quota place to double Olympic Champion Michael Diamond from Australia who scored a new World Record of 148 on his way to becoming the World Champion.

He does have the consolation in knowing that his score combined with Derek Burnett and David Malone’s 118’s secured the World Championships Team Bronze medal.
