Irish athletes in Euro Top 10 rankings

Gillick’s best time was 44.79 seconds.The Dubliner ran that time when winning his semi-final at the European Championships in Barcelona. The number one spot in the 400m ranking is filled by Belgium’s Jonathan Borlee with a time of 44.71 seconds.

Ireland’s only medallist in Barcelona, Derval O’Rourke, is ranked third in the highly competitive 100 metres hurdles with her sensational national record time of 12.65 seconds which she clocked when claiming the silver medal, to match the one she won in Gothenburg four years ago.
The fastest time of the year of over the distance was 12.57 seconds by Carolin Nytra of Germany.

Cork’s Olive Loughnane set an excellent new personal best in the 20km Walk this year of 1:28:36 to be ranked eighth in Europe over the distance for 2010. Loughnane’s time of 44:08 in the 10km Walk also placed her in the top-ten European perfomances for this year.

The only other Irish athlete ranked among the top of the list in their event is the fourth place enjoyed by Robert Heffernan in the 50km Walk, the event in which he performed so well in Barcelona where he finished in fourth place, just missing out on a medal. Heffernan was also ranked 6th in the 10km event and 7th in the 20km in the European Top Ten.

Ireland’s Paul Hession, who qualified for the final of the 200m in Barcelona, has claimed a 9th place with his time of 20.46 seconds, behind the young Frenchman Christophe Lematre who topped the 200 metres rankings with his 20.16 seconds.
