Irish boxers winning start

Tipperary’s Con Sheehan completed a perfect day for Ireland at the European Championships following his win over Levan Guledani of Gerogia in Ankara, Turkey.

The Clonmel BC heavyweight was 14-12 up in the third and final round when Guledani was retired with a hand injury.

Earlier in the day, John Joe Nevin, Cathal McMonagle and Willie McLaughlin claimed victories to make it five wins from five in the last 24-hours for the nine-man Irish squad.

Donegal welterweight McLaughlin beat 12-8 Stephen Banyo of Holland over three, three minute rounds to set up Sunday’s last 16 duel with Borna Katalinic of Croatia.

McMonagle claimed a countback win over Mane Marceta of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the super-heavyweight class in Turkey.

The Holy Trinity Belfast club-man had his hand raised in victory on accepted scores (75-74) following a 15-15 tie in Ankara.

McMonagle will now meet England’s Anthony Joshua in the last 16 on Monday.

Cavan BC bantamweight John Joe Nevin – following Ray Moylette’s win yesterday – made it two wins in a row for Ireland this morning.

The 2009 AIBA World Championships bronze medalist and European Union champ beat Pavol Inchenko of the Ukraine 19-13.

He will take on Nikoloz Izoria of Georgia on Monday.

Sheehan, meanwhile, will face Abdulkhamid Nurmagomedov of Russia tomorrow. McLaughlin, Irish team captain Darren O’Neill, Michael Conlon and Michael McDonagh will also be in action Sunday.
