Irish Boxing Camp in Mayo

Irish boxers begin a 10-day training camp with Australia, Poland and Scotland at the Lough Lannagh holiday village in Castlebar next Tuesday.

The camp will cater for up to 50 boxers, coaches and officials.

“ We’ll be joined by Poland, Scotland and Australia for that, said Walsh following last weekend’s Elite tournament in France.

“Then it’s Almaty, Kazakhstan. We’ll travel out two weeks before the World Championships begin as we have a tapering off training camp arranged.”

Walsh inspected the facilities at Lough Lannagh ahead of the 17th edition of the World Elite Championships which begin in Almaty on October 11th.

He added: “The Mayo training camp is an excellent set up. It’s in proximity to the Castlebar boxing club with plenty of amenities in a tranquil area. It’s a world class training environment and that’s why we’re going there.”

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny last year announced a €12.5 million investment in the development of a national outdoor pursuits academy at the Lough Lannagh  complex.

The collaborative effort between GMIT, Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council will see a new swimming pool complex and a training centre for outdoor pursuits at Lough Lannagh.

The outlay will also lead to the development of a six-lane tartan running track and four playing fields on a site located within close vicinity of the GMIT campus.
