Irish Boxing Team ready for Kiev

The 2010 European Senior Championships begin at the Ice Palace in the Russian capital on Friday.

Ireland sparred with the Ukraine and Armenia yesterday and Irish head coach Billy Walsh reports that there are no injury concerns.

Walsh said: ‘The squad had very good and productive sparring sessions with the Ukraine and Armenia and we’re very pleased with the way those sessions went. No one picked up injuries and everyone is healthy.

‘We’ll have one final training session on Tuesday amongst ourselves and we’ll leave for Moscow early on Wednesday morning. There’s only a few days to go now before the start of the European Championships and we’re all looking forward to getting the tournament underway.’

Walsh is also quietly confident that Ireland can do well at the 2010 event – two years after John Joe Joyce, Ross Hickey and Eamon O’Kane claimed bronze medals at the Championships in Liverpool.

Walsh added: ‘ If the squad performs at its full potential in Moscow then I would be quietly confident that we will do well.’

41 nations have registered for the Championships.
