Irish Open Championships – Mens Epee International Satellite Competition

The main event, the Men’s Epee FIE Satellite competition had an entry of 45 competitors from 10 countries. The popular winner was Dublin resident Israeli Ido Ajzenstadt who beat former champion Joao Cordeiro from Portugal. Tied for third place were another Dublin resident Roumanian Radu Andrei and Alarico Bosio from Italy.
There was a very encouraging high entry in the Women’s Epee event which was dominated by the Champion Rayssa Costa who defeated her team-mate Cleia Guilhon in the final. Joint third were Dublin-based Olga Velma from Estonia and Pentathlete Natalya Coyle.
In Men’s Foil the champion for the first time was David Alexander originally from Northern Ireland now based in the UK who defeated Conor Nagle from Dublin in the final. Third were Chris Lennon from Liverpool and Trinity College club captain Max Milner.
Women’s Foil saw Dublin-based Portuguese Joana Ramalho defeat 16-year old Viktoria Kralikova from Bratislava who travelled to the competition with her father International Referee David Kralik. Joint third were Rachel Philpott from Northern Ireland and Dublin-based Katja Rybakova from Russia.
In Men’s Sabre Stephen Concannon (IRL) was defending his title this year when he beat Raphael Gilmas of France in the final., with Paris-based Owen McNamee and James Nicholl from Derry in joint third place.
Women’s Sabre Champion was Cambridge student from Derry Niamh Spence who defeated Erin Barclay from UCC in the final, with US Erasmus student Mary Ball from Queens Belfast and another US origin fencer Maddie Siegmund from NUIM in joint third.
The trophy for Best Under-18 performance was awarded to Viktoria Kralikova from Bratislava.

For the 7th time, Ireland will be hosting this weekend an FIE (International Fencing Federation) Satellite Competition at Men’s Epee at UCD Sports Centre, Belfield. The top 8 in this competition will be awarded world ranking points and will also be awarded points in the Coupe du Nord ranking system.
There is an entry of 47 fencers, 27 of whom are Irish. A total of 11 countries (including Ireland) are represented: Brazil, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mauritius, Panama, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia
The format of the competition will be a first round of 7 pools of 7 or 6 fencers – this round is used to establish a seeding for the second round, and no fencers will be eliminated from this first round. The second round of 7 pools of 7 or 6 fencers will be seeded from the results of the first round. The last 12 will then be eliminated and the top 35 from the 2nd pool round will go forward into an incomplete direct elimination table of 64 fencers, where the no. 1 seed will meet no. 64, and so on, until 4 fencers remain. There will then be 2 semi-final matches and a final.
In addition to the Men’s Epee event, the Women’s Foil and Women’s Epee will take place on Saturday 7th, with the Men’s Foil, Men’s Sabre and Women’s Sabre on Sunday.
The equipment needed to run this competition has mainly been funded from the Lottery.
