Irish Physiotherapists Supporting 2012

Irish Physiotherapists will not just provide a world class service to Irish athletes during the London Olympic Games.

In total Ireland will have ten physiotherapists supporting 14 sports at training camp and Olympic Villages in London, Weymouth and Eton Dorney.

A further ten Irish physios are servicing LOCOG sports venues and the village polyclinics.

This is indeed a reflection of the quality of service provision from members of the Society of Chartered Physiotherapists in  Ireland.

In addition Dr. Marie-Elaine Grant, a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, the first Irish woman to receive an IOC appointment will monitor all physiotherapy activities and facilities for the 205 nations participating in London.

During the Games it is expected that there will be a total involvement of up to 800 physiotherapists.

In addition she is responsible for providing the Medical and Scientific Department of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne with guidelines on the organisation of physiotherapy services for the Olympic Games and is now the contact person for the IOC for all issues related to physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Marie-Elaine served as Chief Physiotherapist to the Irish Olympic teams for five consecutive Olympic Games commencing with the 1992 Barcelona Olympics through to the 2008 Beijing Games. She has also served with the Irish Winter Olympic teams in Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010 and with ten European Youth Olympic teams.

She has done sterling work for Ireland’s Olympians for many years and her outstanding skills now enhance the work of the IOC at the highest level.

Aidan Woods , Team Ireland’s head physio for London 2012 and Medical officer Rod McLoughlin were in London at the start of the week to assist the Team Ireland HQ set up. Team physio Eimear O’Leary has spent the past few days setting up the Irish Team  medical centre and supporting canoeists Hannah Craig and Eoin Rheinisch.
