Niall Griffin on Lorgaine finished his dressage with 50.60 penalty points while Patricia Ryan scored 78.70.
Going into the cross country tomorrow Ireland lie tenth in the team event while Griffin in 33rd overall in the individual competition. Lyons and O’Connor are tied for 46th place, Curran is 57th and Ryan 69th.
Derek Burnett finished the qualifying competition in the men’s trap in 29th place after recording scores of 22 and 19 in the fourth and fifth rounds.
Chloe Magee lost in the second round (last 32) of the women’s singles today, losing 2-0 to Jaeyoun Jun (Korea) 12-21, 14-21.
On the game
“This girl is one of the best in the game and all I wanted to do was go out there and play my best badminton and I did that in parts but I just wasn’t consistent enough. I played a good game but just not long enough. I wouldn’t say I played better than the first round, I’d say I played better in patches but I gave her a few easy points and you just can’t do that against Asian players because they are just too good. I’m happy I made her play hard, playing against this sort of player is an experience in itself, she’s not 11th in the world for no reason.”
On her performance overall
“I’m 19 years old and I’ve had a really good Olympics here. I wasn’t expected to win the first game against someone ranked forty places above me so that will give me a lot of confidence.”
Tim Goodbody finished 15th in both the third and fourth races of the Finn class and lies 18th overall.
John Joe Joyce produced an outstanding performance to beat Gyula Kate (Hungary) 9-5 on points to make it two wins out of two for Ireland’s boxers.
On his unexpected win:
“God was on my side. The guy hit me with so many right hooks in the last three fights but he didn’t touch me this time.”
“I could see it in his eyes after two rounds that he was surprised that I was still there.”
On losing to KATE (HUN) three times previously:
“I couldn’t lose to him anymore, four times would have been bad.”
On his strategy:
“I figured out that when he (KATE) is finished attacking, he just stands there and that’s when I can attack.”
On the bout:
“I don’t even know the score I won by but I don’t even care. I’m just happy.”
The lightweight four finished fourth in a tight heat and must now go to the repechage to qualify for the semi-final. It takes place on Tuesday.

“I know that we haven’t got through on the first go but you just have to deal with it. We put in a fast time and the crews were all very close together so that’s just the luck of the draw so we’ll have to go through the repechage.”
“We’ve been dealing with head wind rowing in training and today it was a tail wind so perhaps our start let us done but we had a good strong pace during the middle part of the race. We’ve a lot to build towards and we want to peak for the final and not the heat, we’ll see how the French and Poles do in a few days time.”
Aisling Cooney was 7th in her heat of the 100m backstroke, just outside of her personal best finishing in a time of 1:02.50.
On her swim
“I’m not disappointed with the swim, I felt I was going fast and for me this is all a learning experience. It gives me the desire to move forward to 2012.”
