Darren Sutherland beat Nabil Kassel (Algeria) when the referee stopped the fight in the fourth round.

Afterwards Sutherland said, “People who have seen me in the Stadium know that I’ve never been in a dull fight in my life. There was never a period in that fight where I was going to try and protect a lead.

“It’s no secret that this is my last amateur tournament. I want to go pro afterwards so in a sense this is a good marketplace for me to put my skills on display.

“It’s clear I’m more tailored to that game and there is more to come. I’ll take the next fight and see where we can go. No matter what I’m an Olympian now and you can’t take that away from me.”

Sutherland will now fight Alfonso Blanco Parra from Venezuela, the world silver medallist in Chicago last year on Wednesday. A win would guarantee him a medal.

Boxing

Paddy Barnes became the third Irish boxer to reach the last eight when he defeated

“I’m a slow starter but I got on top. In the last round I was up but he still didn’t want to know so I must have hurt him.”

In the quarter-finals Paddy will meet Pole Lukasz Maszczyk.
