Irish Rowers competing for Rio qualification

Sanita Puspure finished fifth this morning in the women’s singles semi-final and will go in the B final on Sunday at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France.

Sanita requires a top-three place in the final to qualify for Rio 2016.

The men’s and women’s lightweight double sculls compete tomorrow in their B finals, and a place in the top five in the B Final would qualify them for Rio.

Irelands Shane O’Driscoll and Mark O’Donovan had an excellent win in the B final of the lightweight pair .

The two Corkmen took over the lead just before halfway and held off challenges by the Czech Republic and Spain. The Spanish charged up to the line and were beaten by Ireland by just .15 of a second. The win places the Ireland pair seventh in the world.  Ireland’s women’s four were fifth in their A final. The race was won by the United States, with Britain taking silver and China bronze.
