Irish Sailing Team at OCI

Irish Sailing Performance Director James O’Callaghan and his Olympic squad were in Olympic House today, attending a rules workshop for the Olympic squad.

Former Olympian and world class sailing official Bill O’Hara was on hand to pass on his experience and understanding of new rules to sailors such as Peter O’Leary, David Burrows, Matt McGovern, Annalise Murphy. They were also given a brief overview of the Olympic Council and Sailing Ireland’s planning for the 2012 London Olympic Games  by OCI Chief Executive Stephen Martin.

Ireland’s Star Class sailors O’Leary and Burrows in particluar have been competing well on the International circuit.

In spite of leading the recent Bacardi Cup regatta, they were pipped by a single point for overall honours in Miami.

France’s Guillaume Florent and Pascal Rambeau accomplished a rare achievement in the finale of the 84th event Cup.

Florent, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the Finn class who switched over to Star keelboat last year, won the prestigious regatta at his first attempt.

O’Leary and Burrow’s second overall in the 93-boat fleet is being hailed as a major result for the pair who have sights firmly set on selection for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
