Irish Women’s Basketball make history

In Bucharest on Saturday 6th September 2014 the Irish Women’s 3 X 3 Basketball Team beat Ukraine in the closest of matches with a final score of 16 to 14 in the favour of Team Ireland, to qualify for the First European Games in Baku 2015.

Team Ireland’s Niamh Dwyer, Alish McLaughlin, Grainne Dwyer and Suzanne Maguire with coach Matt Hall made history by becoming the first Women’s Basketball Team to qualify for the European Games under Basketball Ireland and the Olympic Council of Ireland.

The Team will now go on to represent Ireland in the First European Games in Baku 2015 which is on from the 12th to 28th June 2015.

It will be great for Team Ireland to have a team sport in Baku 2015 and this takes the number of athletes qualified to 20. Already qualified are Gymnastics (6), Wrestling (2), Boxing (3) and Canoeing (5).

It also means that at this stage of European Games Qualification Team Ireland have 11 Women Qualified and 9 Men.
