Eventing Team:

Ireland slipped back to ninth place in the Eventing Team overall standings after the ‘carnage’ of Cross Country on Day 2. With 17 riders eliminated, Ireland’s equestrian crew can still be satisfied places are still to play for in the Showjumping phase.

It was a tough start with Padraig McCarthy eliminated for a fall with Simon Porloe. On a testing course, McCarthy had already encountered difficulties at the Pan Am Wall combinations (11&12 of 33) but there was little he could do about the eventual tumble.

Both horse and rider walked away from the incident, but there was added pressure for Clare Abbott, Jonty Evans and Mark Kyle to complete the course and keep team hopes alive.

Abbott recovered from 40 points worth of jump penalties to come home safe with just 25.6 added for time. Jonty Evans was next up with a superb clear round and 22.80 for time penalties leaving Mark Kyle to play it safe and finish his round with a 30.80 time penalty and just a single jump penalty.

Rowing:

It was another successful day for Ireland’s rowers as both crews advanced to the semi-finals of the Lightweight Double Sculls. Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe finished second behind South Africa in a time of 7:10.91, but were comfortable throughout and in second place through all their splits.

The Men’s pairing of Paul & Gary O’Donovan had a real race on their hands against Italy but eventually won their heat in 6:23:72 – the second fastest time of the day. It was an exciting heat as the brothers were 4th after 500m, 3rd after 1000m, 2nd after 1500m and first at the finish line.

Boxing:

Paddy Barnes lost out to Samuel Carmona Heredia by split decision in the first round of the Men’s Light Flyweight Competition. The 29 year old cited a lack of energy in losing to his 20 year old opponent saying that the struggle to make 49kg ultimately took its toll. “I don’t even know how I got the energy to throw as many punches as I did, but that’s the way it goes,” he said. It was all-square heading into the final round as Barnes recovered from a sluggish start, but he visibly tired in the closing exchanges to end hopes of a third successive Olympic medal.

Sailing:

There was more good news for Ireland on the water as Annalise Murphy finished Day One of the Women’s Laser Radial competition in fourth place in the overall rankings. There are eight races to go before any potential medal race, but it was a positive start as Murphy won her first race before battling hard to finish 14th in Race 2.

Much is being made of Finn Lynch‘s age and the landlocked nature of his native Carlow, but the 20 year old looked assured and right at home on his Olympic debut. Lynch is in the top half of a strong field in 21st position after 2/10 races. He was 14th in Race 1 before and 28th in race 2.
