If you’re still not sure whether volunteering at London 2012 is for you, don’t worry. Applications are open until midnight on 27 October 2010, so you’ve still got plenty of time to decide.
Follow the simple steps to find out what being a Games Maker is all about
London 2012 are looking for two types of volunteers , generalists and specialists
Generalists will make up the majority of Games Makers – you won’t need specialist skills or qualifications, but you should bring passion and enthusiasm to the Games.
There are almost 30 different teams – known as ‘functional areas’ – within LOCOG that will need generalist volunteers during the Games, from transport to village management, from language services to sustainability.
You might be given a role as a steward, a radio operator or an athlete escort. You will not need previous volunteering experience for these roles, and full training will be provided.
Specialist Games Makers will need specialist skills or qualifications in order to fulfil their role, such as sport and medical training. These Games Makers will be made up of doctors, nurses, sports specialists, anti-doping officers and press operations staff.
The Olympic Council of Ireland have already held seminars for physiotherapists in Dublin and Belfast to highlight the medical opportunities and recruitment process required to become involved. Chief Executive Stephen Martin and Marie Elaine Grant (now IOC Medical Commission) together with Lynn Booth Chief Physiotherapist for London 2012 met with over 120 Irish physios. Martin said “It was an opportunity for physios to hear how they can participate as volunteer physiotherapists at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The London 2012 Olympic Games are most likely to be the closest we will experience to an Olympic Games in our lifetimes, but there are many other ways to become involved in the Games”
