Loughnane wins Silver in Berlin World Championships

Loughnane’s achievement was over looked by many, but the Loughrea AC athlete had the opportunity to build on what was an excellent performance 12 months ago and she was confident she could match those expectations. Before the race Loughnane said: ‘Everything seems to be coming together at the right time for me, which is great.

‘I had a slow start after Beijing but I can’t complain with how the season has been going. I am feeling as good if not stronger than I was last year.’

Loughnane, was joined by fellow walkers Rob Heffernan and Jamie Costin in final prepearations for Berlin covered by the Olympic Partnership Agreement with Olympic Council of Ireland/Polish Olympic Committee.

Whilst there was dissapointment for Heffernan in the 20k walk, finishing 15th, Loughnane produced her best major Championship performances to date to win a silver medal in Berlin.

She walked a season best to finish just behind Olympic Champion Olga Kaniskina.

OCI  Chief Executive Stephen Martin  said , we  are extremely delighted to see Olive step up to the podium and we are delighted to have helped facilitate the pre Games camp for all the walkers in Spala”  he added,

“This result should hopefully inspire the rest of the team to grow in sellf belief and to produce some more outstanding performances”
