Malahide Skier is Irish Flag Bearer at Olympic Closing Ceremony

“This is a great honour for me” Shane commented. “Ireland has been one of the most popular nations competing in Vancouver, due to the close links between Canada and Ireland. They love the Irish here and want us to become a bigger winter sport nation. Thats my objective as well and hope that many young Irish people wil be encouraged to take up winter sports as a result of the impact of the Irish Team’s participation at these amazing Games”

O’Connor will compete in the Men’s Slalom, Saturday 27th February. Start times: first run from 10am and second run from 13.45pm Canadian time.

82 countries competed at the Games, undoubtedly the most successful winter edition in Olympic history.

Dublin skier, Shane O’Connor is representing Ireland in the Winter Olympics in the Slalom. He is Ireland’s top male skier and has competed in five World Championships.

He holds down a full-time job in IT but has been training for this moment for years – his parents instilled a love of skiiing in him when he was a child and he quickly became a fixture out in Kilternan and then on the international competition circuit. He is a former Dublin junior hurler.
