Munich bids to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

The German city, which held the summer Games in 1972, faces competition from Annecy in France and Pyeongchang in South Korea.

China are also set to submit a bid, for either Harbin or Changchun, before the 15 October deadline.

The International Olympic Committee will decide the hosts on 6 July 2011.

Three Spanish cities; Zaragoza, Huesca and Jaca, have made a joint bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The trio decided not to bid for the 2018 Games because the 2014 event is being held in the Russian city of Sochi and they felt it was unlikely Europe would get two Games in a row.

Vancouver, Canada, will host the 2010 Games from 12 to 28 February.
