Irish swimmer Barry Murphy has won a Bronze Medal at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Eindhoven. 27 year old Murphy, who has just returned from the FINA Swimming World Championships in Barcelona, was the third fastest qualifier from this morning heats in a new Irish Record time of 26.54. The Dubliner bettered this time in the Final to secure Bronze and set another Irish Record of 26.40.
South Africa’s Roland Schoeman was the Gold medallist in 25.86, with Fabio Scozzoli (Italy) taking Silver in 25.88.
Following his 3rd place finish in the Breaststroke event, Murphy then went on to set in another new Irish Record in the 50m Butterfly Final finishing 7th overall in a time of 23.28, he had held the previous record of 23.39 which was set at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in 2012.
Germany’s Stefan Diebler was the winner of the 50 metre Butterfly event in 22.17. Barry Murphy will be back in the pool tomorrow in the 100m Breaststroke and the 50m Freestyle heats.
Also fresh from World Championship action Fiona Doyle was back in the pool in Eindhoven today. Doyle competed in the 100m Breaststroke heats finishing 12th overall in a time of 1:07.06. The World Championships 50m and 100m Breaststroke semi-finalist will compete in the 50m and 200m Breaststroke events today (Thursday).
