Team Ireland enjoyed its most successful EYOF campaign to date at the 1997 Games in Lisbon, Portugal. Competing against Europe's best young athletes, Ireland secured an impressive four medals, including two golds, one silver, and one bronze.
Athletics provided the standout performances. Ciara Sheehy won gold in the women's 200m, while Colm McClean claimed gold in the men's 1500m. In swimming, Leonore Kelleher continued her outstanding youth career by winning silver in the 100m Butterfly and bronze in the 200m Butterfly. Ireland finished the Games with four medals and ranked 15th on the overall medal table.
