Munich 1972 was overshadowed by one of the darkest events in Olympic history when eleven Israeli athletes and coaches were murdered by the Black September terrorist group.
After a suspension of 34 hours and a memorial service in the main stadium, the Games continued - a decision that remains contested.
Ireland's largest team to that point competed across twelve sports. The boxing squad came closest to a medal: four Irish boxers lost only to fighters who went on to win gold, including Mick Dowling at bantamweight and Charlie Nash at lightweight.
Sean Drea finished seventh in the single sculls, a result that pointed toward the fourth-place finish he would achieve in Montreal four years later.
Equestrian competitor Ronnie McMahon carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
