About
Team Ireland enjoyed one of its most successful EYOF performances at Tampere 2009, winning eight medals across athletics and swimming.
The standout performer was Ciara Mageean, who won gold in the women's 1500m with a championship-record performance of 4:15.46. Her victory established her as one of Europe's leading young middle-distance runners and marked the beginning of a successful international career. Athletics contributed five medals in total, with Shane Quinn and Christine McMahon winning silver, while the Irish women's 4x100m relay team secured bronze. In swimming, Sycerika McMahon produced an outstanding campaign, winning three individual medals and emerging as one of the stars of the Irish team.
The eight-medal haul made Tampere one of Ireland's strongest EYOF performances before the record-breaking success achieved in Tbilisi 2015.
